The Ryan Leaf saga continues its unending journey, what with his pending 20 years of burglary charges staring him in the face. As a Charger fan, I feel strangely compelled to tell the tale as I saw it of a player that stood next to Peyton Manning, but never followed in Manning's footsteps.

Ryan was doomed five minutes after he stepped out of  draft headquarters, deciding what he needed to become a great quarterback was a celebration run in Las Vegas, before coming to meet the San Diego Press and Charger family. RED FLAG.

Leaf was also doomed by the arrival of Kevin Gilbride "SUUUper Genius" the previous season. Gilbride had Stan Humphries to start at QB during the1997 season, but Gilbiides crappy protection packages left Stan out there with no protection, which led to Humphries career ending concussion against the Chiefs.

So Leaf comes in to save the day, and is immediately thrown into the starting line up, where he should never have been. Leaf would have benefited from playing for someone like Bill Walsh, or  Bill Parcells, someone who would have given the kid his clipboard, and sent him to school.

Leaf had the physical skill we all dream of, but he was completely unprepared for the environment of the NFL. It became obvious that Leaf had won games in college simply by sending someone out to the Gatorade cooler and turning a hook.

Gilbride was gone after week 8, run out of town tarred and feathered, never to return. So erase all that Leaf learned during his first camp, and toss out Gilbride's offensive schemes that Steve Young would have had a hard time running. Gilbride has also never said a word about his time TEACHING Leaf...

Meanwhile, Peyton Manning is already working his way into the hall of fame, while Leaf was arguing with reporters and fans. Mercifully, the Chargers decided that enough was enough after the 2000 season, one that the Bolts went 1-15 under Mike Riley, and cut Leaf outright.

Leaf contends that his shoulder was ruined during his time with the Chargers, but his total lack of desire was what ruined him. Fairly, i must point out that it was not like Sid Gillman or Don Coryell were around to mentor the kid, heck Bobby Ross never even got a snap with him, and Ross was directly responsible for Stan Humphries development into a championship quarterback. Leaf attended Palookville University while here in San Diego, not even Johnny Unitas could have excelled under those conditions.                     The Perfect Storm...

We all make mistakes, and we all try to apologize, but Ryan Leaf still does not accept that his actions have led him to where he is today, facing an OJ like stretch in the hoosegow. He is a blame thrower...

Said Ryan on his current existence up in Canada “I’m the one who controls my celebrity up here, not the sports media down in the States.” See, it our fault, not his. Move along folk's nothing to see here. And sadly, it is true, as what could have been a hall of fame career has become nothing to see, at all.

Just once, I would like to see the guy say "Sorry Charger fans, I sucked". Simple. I have had to do that very thing on more than one occasion in my life, you just gotta suck it up and apologize. The one thing you cant control is whether that's going to be good enough for people for forgive and forget, but it is a start.

Take a look at this photo below, Leaf looks like a lifetime Pro Bowler.

Remember kids, STUDY, Or this could be you...

Good Luck Ryan...

And if you walk on these charges, grow a beard and move to Fiji... Duh... That is EXACTLY what OJ should have done... Fame is fleeting, Prison counts all day long...
